Having spent a great deal of time in the USA, it's clear that self service canteens and cafes are growing in popularity! But will this transfer to the UK? Ian Campbell takes a closer look. Introduction: It's July 2023 and I'm sat in a contactless, self service work canteen in Ohio. The automotive manufacturer, who employs some 500 staff, recently moved to a new canteen model, one where the space is purely self service. The food is replenished daily and the fridges restocked with drinks, snacks, salads, bagels, sandwiches and microwaveable ready meals. It's a move away from fresh food being cooked by canteen staff but it's reduced costs for the client and streamlined the sales process. Perhaps this is a move we'll see more in the UK during 2024? Self-service canteens align perfectly with these preferences, offering patrons the ability to choose, customise, and serve themselves quickly.
